Councillor Mischa Borris - Green Candidate for Hackney Mayor
Mischa was elected Councillor in Clissold ward for the term 2006-2010.
Even though Mischa is the only Green Councillor in Hackney, she has successfully got Hackney Council to agree two motions, the first signing Hackney up to becoming a Fair Trade borough, and the second with the ultimate aim of creating a 20mph speed limit on all roads controlled by Hackney Council.
She has also questioned the Labour administration on subjects as diverse as the illegal demolition of the old Vortex jazz club, the lack of progress on installing cavity wall insulation to Hackney's blocks of flats and admission charges to Hackney's leisure centres for school groups. She has also repeatedly urged the Council to try to disinvest its pension fund from its considerable holdings in arms manufacturing companies. One of her first questions to the Mayor, shortly after she was elected, was to ask Hackney would sign up to the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change. The reply was that there was no point in signing a meaningless bit of paper - yet Hackney did eventually sign up early in 2008!
She sits on the Licensing Committee, and Living in Hackney Scrutiny Commission. She is also a trustee of Abney Park Trust, and was formerly the Vice-Chair of Stoke Newington Conservation Area Advisory Committee.
Mischa produces a bimonthly or quarterly e-bulletin about her work on the Council. If you would like to sign up to it, please email her at this address:
