Stoke Newington By-Election

Matt Hanley in 2009

In January 2009, a council by-election was triggered in Stoke Newington by the resignation of Labour councillor Jamie Carswell. The election was a closely fought contest between the Greens and Labour. Matt Hanley gained ground for the Greens, closing in on Labour, easily beating the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives, and setting things up for an even closer battle in 2010.

The result shows that in Stoke Newington the 2010 local elections will be a clear battle between Labour and the Greens. You can read a bit more about the byelection here.
